Sensors in muscles and joints send signals

       about position and movement.

Symtoms of sea sickness occur as the brain’s coordinated response to uncertainty about the position or motion of the body as a result of these conflicing sensory messages.

After some time the brain will ordinarily adapt and “make sense” of messages that previously seemed conflicting. Within 48 to 72 hours most sea sickness sufferers will be free of symptoms as a result of this adaptation. This is what is known as “getting your sea legs”.
